Despite playing poker for almost 30 years, Ben Roberts is hardly a familiar face, but he’s backing himself to go big

You won’t find Ben Roberts in the current European tournament rankings. It’s even possible you’ve never heard of him. But I have a feeling that will change. ‘Something good is going to happen in the next couple of years,’ he says. And I believe him, for three reasons.

First, he’s a great player – one of the country’s top cash game players, maybe even the best – and has been for 30 years or so. He reckons he needs to win at least £200,000 a year tax-free to meet his expenses and his family’s expensive lifestyle.
