After two weeks, twenty tournaments and a few close calls for players like Ben Grundy, Surinder Sunar and James Sudworth, PokerPlayer is proud to say that the UK finally has its first bracelet winner of the 2009 WSOP.
Professional player JP Kelly took down Event #20, the $ 1,500 Pot-limit Hold'em for the biggest score of his young career, $ 194,045. Kelly entered the table as the chipleader and was able to keep that up for the whole of the final day before emerging the victor.
It could all have been so different for the 23 year old from Aylesbury though when he found himself drawing to just two outs after a misjudged all-in shove against fellow monster stack Andrew Radel. The Brit was drawing to the final two nines in the deck - a miracle nine of clubs on the river vaulting him into a monstrous chiplead which he never looked like losing.
After the tournament was over Kelly said, 'this has to be the highlight of my life so far. I don't know how I will celebrate, but it will probably involve a lot of alcohol'!
Congratulations go out to JP on his stunning victory and if we are lucky this could be the signal for a UK stampede with plenty of events remaining. PokerPlayer hopes to catch up with JP Kelly soon for an exclusive interview so if you have any questions you would like to ask the bracelet winner drop me an email at ross_jarvis@dennis.co.uk
