It wasn’t just chess that Tony G excelled at in school. In the early 1980s the Rubik’s Cube puzzle swept the world and a young Tony G was, predictably, the local champion. ‘I can’t remember my time but it was measured in seconds,’ he says.
‘It’s just something you know – you can’t explain it, but you just know what to do – you can do it blindfold. It’s not complicated. It’s a box, which you can hold in your head and visualise. If you think you can do it, you can do it, like anything.’
