Floating

Each month Marc ‘Mr Cool’ Goodwin gets to the bottom of some of the game’s trickiest concepts

What is ‘floating’?

There are differing definitions of floating but I define it thus: someone bets on the flop and you’re of the belief that they’re tying to win the pot having not hit the flop or only caught a little of it. So you call (usually in position) and stay in the hand with the intention of taking the pot away on the turn when your opponent checks. You might not have anything either but you’re staying around to make a move. However, floating is a high variance move and can be extremely expensive. You must grow accustomed to trying it, but don’t go mad with it.
