The Players: Simon Cawkwell

Although bear trader Simon Cawkwell is best known in the stock market - where his nickname is Evil Knievel, owing to his daring City gambles - he also wagers £1 million on horses. What are his gambling secrets? James Hipwell reports.

When Inside Edge called round to see Simon Cawkwell in his South Kensington lair, he wasn't in the best of moods. 'You haven't come at a very good time, I'm afraid - I've just lost £2.5 million,' he told us.

Blimey! It turns out that for most of 2003, Cawkwell had been betting that shares in the property company Regus would fall.
