Weekend Review

London Irish players celebrate their big Heineken Cup win

London Irish players celebrate their big Heineken Cup win

A mixed weekend in the rugby markets, with some upsets and plenty of dodgy refereeing

Sorry about the delay in the review this week but US Masters Fever grabbed me and I tried to play 18 holes of golf.

It was, quite simply a mistake. The wind was laceratingly cold and I copld barely hold the club let alone use it to propel the ball any distance towards its intended target. My score was appalling and probably approaching a decent Brian Lara innings at Antigua.

Anyway, how did we fare at the weekend rugby?

Firstly I think the refereeing was awful in all rugby on TV at the weekend. Normally the refs are safe from me as I do not like to second guess a darned difficult job, but occcasionally one must.

Super14

Paul Marks has now admitted he made a colossal blunder not going to the Television Match Official for the final play that would have been a try or penalty try, and meant the Hurricanes defeated the Sharks and won us our bet. How annoying!

Trade the Waratahs v the Blues was our plan, and for the first 25 minutes it worked beautifully and gave us a profit. The Tahs ended up easy winners, but there were plenty of price moves early on as the match swung back and forth for us to make money.

Heineken Cup

Sarries did the Ospreys which was a shock for me.

But London Irish did Perpignan which I picked (and most pundits and experts went with the strength of the Catalans); while Gloucester v Munster was a bit of a damp squib.

Our trading plan would have worked if Patterson had kicked those early easy goals.

One mate of mine did the trades anyway as he thought he would not miss, and ended up making good money so the strategy was there and worked although the scoreline looks very one-sided.
